Introduction
Vysoké Mýto (Alta Muta in Latin, Hohenmauth in German, High Toll in English) is one of the oldest and most significant cities in the Pardubice region, in the east of Bohemia.
The historical centre of the city is an Urban Heritage Zone. When taking a stroll through the centre, you cannot miss the square, one of the largest in the country after Prague, the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence, the building of the old town hall, the belfry from the 16th century, and the Choceň, Prague or Litomyšl Gates. The Vodárenská and Klášterská bastion have remained preserved in the medieval fortifications. Expositions in the regional museum are devoted to the history of handicrafts and guilds. The museum also houses the original furnishings of the Viennese study of Alois Vojtěch Šembera, a Czech linguist, historian of literature, writer, journalist and patriot, who was born in Vysoké Mýto in 1807.
The most important industrial company is Iveco Bus Factory (brand name Karosa). The factory was founded in 1895 by Josef Sodomka. The company produces about 2,500 buses a year.
